A little history…
Designed by R J Mitchell of Supermarine Aviation Works, the Spitfire first flight took place on 5th March 1936. Sadly, Mitchell passed away a year after the Spitfire’s first flight however had he lived he would have come to see his design become one of if not the most highly celebrated craft among the British forces in WW2. However, it was not until after the Battle of Britain that the Spitfire superseded the Hurricane; seeing action in European, Mediterranean, Pacific and South East Asian territories.
The Spitfire has flown for several nations air forces, from Britain to the States, Canada and France. Not to mention having been produced for a full decade, reaching a total of 20,351 units. 60 of which are still flight-able to this day.
The days of the Spitfire king have sadly come to an end, but its operational history remains one of the most memorable.
